Federal Labor opposition leader through the 1970s until Gough. He was the first Australian politician to ever be shot while going about his business - and he was never the same again afterwards. The shooter, Peter Kocan, was never tried for the offence as he was deemed mentally incompetent. He's now professor of English at The University of Queensland in Brisbane.
